Weekend Getaway at the Glenn Hotel

Not every “staycation” has to involve making a tent out of bedsheets in your family room, eating frozen pizza and pretending that everyone is having fun when you’d rather just lie on the couch, drink wine and watch the latest episode of “Desperate Housewives.”

We had our own version of a sophisticated staycation a few weeks ago, and may make it a regular event for us.

I’ve spent several lovely evenings at 11 Stories, the small, charming rooftop terrace of the Glenn Hotel with the best outdoor view of Atlanta I’ve ever seen. But I’d never stayed in this boutique hotel until a few weekends ago when we had a grown-up staycation here.

After driving the few short miles from our house, we checked in and were offered a welcome drink of strawberry sake. I’m not sure if it’s a trend or not to offer an amenity at check-in, but it’s one I heartily encourage and goes a long way towards a wonderful first impression of a hotel. Read the full post »

Loews Opens Hotel in Midtown

Loews Atlanta Hotel Exterior

We strolled into lunch on the cushy newly laid acres of carpet to the uplifting sounds of a gospel group joyously belting out “Oh Happy Day.” Indeed, it was a happy day at the opening of the brand-new Loews Hotel in Midtown.

Hey, any opening these days is something to cheer about, but this gorgeous new hotel is particularly exciting. It’s the first new-build hotel for Loews in five year, which operates 19 properties in the U.S. and Canada.

As I stood there on blocked-off 11th Street in the warm March sun with hundreds of other folks waiting for the pre-lunch ceremony to begin, I thought about how much this area had changed. Back in the day, people came to Midtown for a different kind of fun, generally illegal.  Wanted to find hippies or drugs in the sixties in Atlanta? Right on 14th Street. These days if you’re cruising around Midtown, you’re most likely looking for a parking spot for a hot new bar or restaurant.

After a rousing song by a marching band, the crowd heard remarks from Steve Selig, Mayor Kasim Reed and Caesar Mitchell.  Then gazillionaire Jonathan Tisch, Chairman and CEO of Loews Corp, was on hand for a few words. The sweetest ones to my ears were that “travel and tourism are at the forefront to create jobs.” Can I hear an amen to that? Read the full post »

Georgian Terrace Still Rockin’ After Renovation

We make our debut on the red carpet - thanks to a little photo magic.

We make our debut on the red carpet - thanks to a little photo magic.

F. Scott Fitzgerald could have happily lifted a glass to toast the reopening of the Georgian Terrace Hotel. He was once a guest at this Midtown Atlanta landmark that also played host to Calvin Coolidge and Tallulah Bankhead and the premiere gala of “Gone with the Wind.”

The hotel hosted a party to celebrate the completion of $11 million renovation, which included the addition of a third ballroom, a boardroom and the updating of the rooms and suites. All lovely to look at and wonderful for hotel guests, but the addition of Livingston Restaurant and Bar, led by one of Atlanta’s favorite chefs, Gary Mennie, is a gift to the entire city. Up on the Roof

My husband and I on the Glenn Hotel rooftop during the travelgirl anniversary party.

(How can I resist that headline?)
Savoring a glass of wine on a rooftop on a warm, glorious day ranks right up there with lounging in a beachside hammock in my happiness file. I’ve been lucky enough to look down on my scenic hometown of Atlanta twice in the past week from lovely rooftop lounges above the city – one brand-new and one just renamed.

Last week I visited Glenn Hotel, right in downtown Atlanta, where Bob Amick of Concentrics is opening a new restaurant. 30 Tables will go in the thus-far-doomed space where BED and Maxim Prime made short-lived efforts to win over dubious concepts in the Atlanta market.

If anyone knows what Atlantans like to eat and what concepts will appeal to them, it’s Bob, so here’s hoping him much success with his new venture. I’m dining there next week – so will report more on the restaurant then.

They have renamed the beautiful Glenn Hotel rooftop 11 Stories. I’ve been up here a few times, most recently for a travelgirl anniversary party, and love the atmosphere up there. Somehow the proximity of office buildings and the CNN Center just heightens the enjoyment – it just feels more decadent when you’re surrounded by people still tied to the office.

A few weeks ago we got a sneak peek at AltoRex Rooftop Lounge on top of Pacci Ristorante in Midtown. Read the full post »

St. Regis a Welcome Addition to Buckhead

My fantasy summer includes afternoons lounging around this pool at the St. Regis, followed by a glass of pinot noir in their gorgeous wine bar.

My fantasy summer includes afternoons lounging around this pool at the St. Regis, followed by a glass of pinot noir in their gorgeous wine bar.

I’ve found my new fantasy home for the summer – poolside at the new St. Regis in Atlanta. We had breakfast there and took a tour this morning and as soon as I stepped onto the terrace, I already pictured myself lounging with a cool beverage in one hand, and a trashy magazine in the other, with an attentive cabana boy nearby should I need someone to turn the page or fluff my towel. Hoop Skirt Dreams

I’ve just about abandoned my search for a hoop skirt with shot glass attachment. And I had such great plans for it.

My desire for said skirt began when I attended the reality-TV-show-star-studded opening of the W Atlanta – Buckhead last month, where we were greeted by a young lady sporting such attire. Her entire hoop skirt was made of rows of metal shot glass holders, each containing a delightful beverage.

Although movement would be severely restricted, I figured it wouldn’t matter, because with such a garment, the party would come to me. The fact that hoop skirts do wonders for hiding any wiggly bits below the waist is just a bonus.

But I console myself that although I may not be able to duplicate that outfit, I am able to duplicate the W experience itself, just about whenever I like. Atlanta now has four W hotels, with three new ones opening just in the past year. And each of the three new hotels has its own amazing, totally different restaurant. Midtown has Spice Market, serving Asian cuisine, Buckhead has Market, serving classic dishes with fresh, local ingredients and downtown has BLT Steak.

I had lunch at Market yesterday, where we were treated to such delights as tuna spring rolls, goat cheese custard with delicate cubes of beets and crushed pistachios and parmesan-crusted chicken. The dessert was a signature of Executive Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, who originated the now

much-copied warm molten chocolate cake. These mini cakes are beautiful on their own. Then you take a bite, and a thick lava of delicious, chocolate oozes out on your plate and the portion of your brain that counts calories temporarily shuts down while you devour every last morsel, sliding your finger along the plate for that last bit of chocolaty goodness.

In addition to the always-accommodating whatever, whenever policy, which I wish many more people in my life would adopt, I love the casual sophistication of each W hotel. You know how when you play a competitive sport, it’s best to play with someone a bit better than you to up your game a bit? That’s the way I feel when I walk into a W. They are more sophisticated than I am, but going there ups my game.  I feel just a bit more casually elegant myself.

Another thing I love about the W? The service is helpful and genuine, without being overbearing. I was there again today, for example, to pick up the coat I left behind at lunch yesterday. The same coat I left on a plane at in the Punta Cana airport last week. That rescue mission was way more complicated, involving several non-English-speaking staff of the airport, including one uniformed young man who insisted I walk five steps behind him back to the security line where banana-hatted ladies insisted on taking my photo because who wouldn’t want to preserve this magic moment?

Anyway, everyone at the W greeted me warmly, including the helpful valet guy who attended my car while I ran inside. So I may not get my hoop skirt, but I do know where to get molten chocolate cake and kind attention. Whatever, whenever.
