Why, oh why did I resist its charms so long? I have been the proud, enthusiastic and smitten owner of an iPhone for three weeks now, and already we’re inseparable. And to think , I almost said no again.
My husband called me from the Apple store, where I’m fairly certain he’s known on a first-name basis and asked if I wanted one. “I’m not mentally prepared,” I cried, thinking I’d need an adjustment period. “Well, your old phone no longer works – I’ll bring the iPhone home,” he said, in a not uncharacteristic tug at me to take a leap for which I was not yet ready.
Actually, I do know why I resisted – as the recipient of hundreds of emails a day, I thought I’d be stressed out by having my email follow me around. Now I realize that I don’t have to have it buzz or beep every time an email comes in, plus I’m too busy playing with all its other way fun features to even look at my email.
Here are some of the things I’ve done with my iPhone in our short time together: Read the full post »

The home of the best blueberry pies on the planet.
I knew it was going to be my kind of trip when I realized that our days’ agenda was built around the acquisition of freshly baked blueberry pies from the local farmers market.
We were visiting friends in Cashiers, North Carolina, who informed us shortly after our arrival that the best blueberry pie on the planet was made at the local farmers market but they ran out fast so getting there when the market opened was imperative. After just one bite of the pie after dinner that night, I agreed and was on board for Operation Piecrust, set to begin at 0900.

The giant boot at LL Bean flagship store in Freeport, Maine.
Being a semi-delicate urban girl whose Brownie troop appeared in a local paper with the headline, “City Girls See Cow,” I never thought I’d be taken over by a desire to take up fly-fishing, wear rubber boots or sleep in a folding hammock.
But that I did when I visited the campus-sized flagship store of LL Bean in Freeport, Maine last week. My tote-bag and my kid’s years of backpacks proved I was no stranger to the world of Bean, but I was clueless about the vastness of its empire. Read the full post »

Orlando Bloom is coming with me on my flight to Maine tomorrow.
You’d think a travel writer would have the packing thing down pretty well, right? Well in the case of this particular writer, you’d be wrong. Plainly speaking, I suck at packing.
I’ve gone away without a toothbrush, a nightgown and even my underwear. Twice. When my son was young, he spent a week at the beach wearing two left shoes. I had thought I was so clever to buy him two pairs of shoes exactly the same so we’d increase our chances of finding one. He may still walk a little lop-sided but it’s just part of his charm, and I sure didn’t want to spend my precious vacation time shoe-shopping for kids, which is right up there was toilet-cleaning as a least favorite chore. We make our debut on the red carpet - thanks to a little photo magic.
F. Scott Fitzgerald could have happily lifted a glass to toast the reopening of the Georgian Terrace Hotel. He was once a guest at this Midtown Atlanta landmark that also played host to Calvin Coolidge and Tallulah Bankhead and the premiere gala of “Gone with the Wind.”
The hotel hosted a party to celebrate the completion of $11 million renovation, which included the addition of a third ballroom, a boardroom and the updating of the rooms and suites. All lovely to look at and wonderful for hotel guests, but the addition of Livingston Restaurant and Bar, led by one of Atlanta’s favorite chefs, Gary Mennie, is a gift to the entire city. Jersey Boys are charming audiences at the Fox this summer in Atlanta.
Being more of a Bruce Springsteen/RollingStones/Rod Stewart kind of girl in my younger years, the softer tones of Frankie Valli pretty much escaped my notice. Add to that the fact that one of my daughter’s college professors once stated, “‘Jersey Boys’ is everything that is wrong with American theater,” and you get the picture – the dancing/singing quartet wasn’t at the top of our list.
But hey, you don’t win Tony Awards for nothing, and it’s playing at my beloved Fox Theatre, so my daughter and I went to see “Jersey Boys” last week. Oh, what a night. Read the full post »
