I could have tossed my flip-flops from the patio of my room and hit the sand and the still waters of Mission Bay where sailboats, kayakers and paddleboarders leisurely drifted around. Just two blocks away, we could stroll the lively boardwalk along the mile-long scenic Mission Beach.

Our timing was off to attend one of the popular Sunset Luaus on Tuesday nights, (also Friday nights in August) at this 313-room Polynesian-themed resort. We also missed the Thursday night beach party at the sister resort, Bahia Resort Hotel. But we did take an evening cocktail cruise on the Mississippi-style paddlewheeler Bahia Belle, which runs daily in the summer and is free for guests.
Other complimentary amenities at this resort fee-free hotel include beach chairs, poolside arcade games and daily crafts, wifi and daily yoga classes in the summer. For a small fee, you can rent paddleboards, kayaks or a totally chill Fun Cat, an electric chaise-lounge catamaran for two. I spent a wonderful couple of hours lazing around the water in the Fun Cat, just enjoying the calm waters.
We devoured a tower of seafood and sipped on passion fruit margaritas at the new restaurant Oceana with a front-row view of the bay and ended our trip with a magnificent massage at the spa, the only beachfront one in San Diego.
